The introduction of Activities for Public Education in China by Chen Hsing-mei

  Chen Hsiang-mei is the famous American-Chinese political activist, the Chairman of US International Cooperation Committee.
  As a successful woman, she always concerns about the women and children; the education cause of China; thinks of the students in the impoverished area, the western part of China. She established “Chen Hsiang-mei Education Foundation”; carried out “Hsiang-mei Thousand School Project” and “Chen Hsiang-mei Education Development Research Center”; “Chen Hsiang-mei Education, Science and Culture Award”. She hosted outstanding teachers from northwestern regions on an excursion to Beijing, she said, “These people might spend their entire lives in the harsh northwest, and never get the chance to go to Beijing. Allowing them to widen their outlook means widening their tens of thousands of students’ outlook.”
  In 1999, Chen proposed to establish “Excellent Principles Award” to cultivate expertised principles for the new century, and also carried out the “Hsiang-mei Thousand Schools Project”, supported by US International Cooperation Committee and implemented by Chen Hsiang-mei Education Development Research Center in Beijing Normal University, this project is mainly facing to the schools in west part esp. in the impoverished west part in China, through different methods such as the instructions of running schools; training of principles and teachers; resources sharing; scholarship; teachers’ study-abroad and finance supporting to help China to develop 1000 middle and primary schools by improving conditions of schools; providing the opportunities for students who can’t study in schools and better education for school students.
  Since 1980s, Chen donated 30 million RMB to Mainland China to carry out various kinds of public education activities and education awards.
  She set up the fund of 100 million RMB in Jing An district for training the lay-off women; donated to help the women to re-obtain employment in An Hui province.
  She also participated in many other public welfare activities such as: “National Excellent Women’s Reading Materials Award”; “Chen Hsiang-mei Teaching Award”; “Chen Hsiang-mei Women Initiative Award”; “Chen Hsiang-mei Scholarship”; “Chen Hsiang-mei TV plays Writing Award” and “Chen Hsiang-mei Press Award”.
