Shanghai International Children's cultural and Art Festival, sponsored by the China Welfare Institute, Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation, etc., will be held once every three years in Shanghai.
The first art festival was held in Shanghai from July 23rd to 27th, 1994. Almost seven hundred guests from all corners of the world participated in the grand meeting. The most imaginative activity of the festival was "I ask the sea to carry my message"----sending the invitations by tossing the drift bottles into the sea.
The second art festival was held from August 2nd to 8th, 1997. Over six hundred foreign children gathered once again in Shanghai. The activity of "Chinese carrier pigeons crossing the oceans to invite little friends to attend the festival" is still remained fresh in everyone's memory.
In 2000 art festival will aim at the new century and reflect the feature of the millennium. The children of Shanghai will invite the foreign children to participate in the art festival through Internet and the events of the festival can be browsed on the net as well. Twenty children's art troupes from twenty-one-countries and regions and twenty-one Chinese children's art troupes participate in the art festival that year.

Children are the future of the world. The past three Shanghai International Children's Cultural and Art Festival have demonstrated how easily children erase national boundaries and come together in the spirit of understanding and friendship. It was a good opportunity for young people to build new bridge of understanding while learning from each other. It was a unique stage upon which children from around the world can gather and look toward the new peaceful world together. The excellent children's art performances will be staged at the opening and closing ceremonies during the festival. The exchange performances will be the highlights of the festival.

With approval of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the 2004 Shanghai International Children's Cultural and Art Festival is to be held from July 24th to 31st, 2004 in Shanghai, China.

The theme of the Art Festival is "Peace * Friendship * Future".

The children's art troupes from all over the world will be invited to participate in the Art Festival. The Art Festival will feature many kinds of activities including opening and closing ceremonies, children's forum, children's Expo, exchange performances, grand get together and sightseeing tours.
